Safer Shopping Online

With so much shopping going online over the next few weeks, we want to make sure your money is being spent where you expect it – and not part of a fraud or scam. Here are a few pointers to start:

Look for the Lock – Make sure the website you are using is a secure site. They start with ‘https’ (the ‘s’ stand for secure). Check it also has a little locked padlock in the browser bar.

Don’t be hooked by ‘Phishing’ – you may get emails through from sites you regularly use, or even Paypal or your Bank. Check that the email address it comes from is legitimate. I had one from Santander (my Bank) telling me of an ‘unauthorized transaction’ with plenty of links to click to see the problem. However, the email address was schornako1@mymail.nku.edu. Not so likely to be Santander!

Avoid ‘Free’ Wi-fi – Data sent through public wi-fi networks can easily be intercepted. Don’t use them for any financial transactions or password entry.

Log-Out when done – Don’t just close the window once you have finished online, log yourself out first.

Keep Bank Savvy – Regularly check your statements or bank online to make sure you have made all the transactions listed, and they are for the expected amount.

What if Fraud Happens? – Sainsbury’s Money Matters infographic below gives plenty of details on what to do if you (or other’s you know) do lose money due to a scam and how to report it. Keep it handy, and share the link to others to help keep their Christmas a happy one.
